Spanish broadcaster Telefonica is launching a pilot scheme to trial outside broadcasting using 5G technology.

The aim of the trial, which has been instigated by the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, is to design and evaluate an early stage proof of concept for 5G remote production capabilities, particularly multi-camera synchronisation utilising 5G private networks (5G in a box solutions).

AVIWEST and Intel are working with Telefonica on the trial.

According to AVIWEST’s chief technology officer Ronan Poullaouec, Telefonica will use the company’s AIR-5G, an ultra-compact bonded cellular unit, and SST (Safe Streams Transport) technology as part of the trial.

“The Telefonica pilot project includes several use cases for industry sectors that include logistics, tourism, education, health, drones and television production of events, enabling the testing new 5G capabilities against real business applications,” Poullaouec tells TVBEurope.

“The 5G contribution TV project is investigating professional remote TV production with cameras equipped with 5G connection and access to production in the Cloud to enhance the mobility of cameras and reduce the complexity and cost of live production,” he adds.

Being a part of the trial enables AVIWEST to “leverage Telefonica’s professional expertise and be able to test our products with their 5G network (actually the core network in the aim of preparing the 5G standalone),” says Poullaouec.

It demonstrates the resiliency and robustness of our solutions during real professional use cases such as live sport coverage, and enables us to propose perfect solution packages to video professionals totally meeting their needs.

The trial will last for one year and take place in Madrid.
